Long before he founded an academy that would support young people across Africa, Serge Betsen built his reputation doing something entirely different.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Betsen became one of rugby’s most feared defenders. Known for his relentless tackling, physical style of play, and leadership on the field, he earned international recognition and established himself as one of France’s standout players.
What makes his story remarkable, however, is not where it ended. It is where it began.
Born in Kumba, Cameroon, Betsen moved to France at the age of 15. Adapting to a new country and culture was not without its challenges, but through determination and hard work he rose through the ranks of French rugby to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
Over the course of his career, Betsen earned more than 60 caps for the French national team, competed in multiple Rugby World Cups, and helped Biarritz Olympique become one of the most successful clubs in France. His performances earned him a reputation as one of the game’s most respected and intimidating defenders.
While his achievements in rugby are remarkable, they tell only part of his story.
In 2004, while still playing professionally, Betsen founded the Serge Betsen Academy in Cameroon. What began as an effort to introduce young people to rugby has since grown into a broader mission supporting children and families through education, healthcare, mentorship, and community programs.
In many ways, the Academy reflects the opportunities that helped shape Betsen’s own journey. A young man who once left Cameroon in search of opportunity now helps create opportunities for others.
His rugby career brought him recognition around the world.
His legacy may be the lives he continues to impact long after the final whistle.
Leuterio Thomas was honored to attend the recent fundraising event in support of the Serge Betsen Academy and its mission. The evening served as a powerful reminder that leadership extends beyond personal achievement and that lasting impact is often measured by the opportunities we create for others.
As part of the event, Graham Thomas was the fortunate winning bidder of an autographed Biarritz Olympique jersey, a meaningful piece of rugby history from the club where Serge Betsen achieved many of his greatest professional accomplishments. We look forward to continuing to support efforts that create opportunities, strengthen communities, and improve lives.
