Project Details

Located between the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road stations, Potomac Yard was envisioned as part of Alexandria’s long-term redevelopment of the former Norfolk & Southern rail yards. The station supports new offices, apartments, retail development, and surrounding neighborhoods while advancing WMATA’s goals for environmental responsibility, high-performance design, maintainability, passenger comfort, and security.

The final design places the station around the existing Metro tracks, with a mezzanine at its north end and a pedestrian bridge crossing the CSX rail corridor to north and south entrance pavilions. The two pavilions provide access from different areas of the growing Potomac Yard community.

project scope

LT worked as part of the Arup-led design team to support the development and coordination of the station architecture. The design followed WMATA’s Design Criteria and required close coordination with WMATA, the City of Alexandria, the City’s Board of Architectural Review, the National Park Service, and the broader design-build team.

The team also responded to input from neighborhood organizations, citizen groups, and nearby businesses gathered through the Potomac Yard Metrorail Implementation Work Group.

our solutions

The project team developed the concept of a “station within a park,” using natural materials and an open architectural expression to connect the station with its landscaped setting. Canopies provide protection for passengers while preserving daylight and views toward the surrounding neighborhood.

Material selections were coordinated with the National Park Service to complement the historic character of the nearby George Washington Memorial Parkway. Natural stone cladding and arched bridge forms draw from the parkway’s 1930s-era architecture without directly reproducing it.

The station’s placement presented another central challenge: introducing new platforms, a mezzanine, pedestrian connections, and entrance pavilions into an active rail corridor and an area undergoing significant development. Careful site and multidisciplinary coordination allowed the new station to fit within the existing Metro track configuration while connecting current neighborhoods with the new mixed-use district taking shape around it.
