LT worked with WMATA to plan and coordinate the station’s bus loading areas, shelters, walkways, benches, trash receptacles, and other passenger amenities. The team integrated these elements with the existing site infrastructure and Metrorail entrance to create a more cohesive station environment.
LT also developed site plans and architectural renderings to support WMATA’s review and decision-making process.
The design reorganizes several overlapping circulation patterns within a limited site. Rerouting the access road improves its relationship with the surrounding roadway network, while the revised kiss-and-ride layout accommodates more vehicles and reduces potential conflicts among cars, buses, and pedestrians.
Rather than applying standard station elements without regard for their surroundings, LT adapted WMATA’s requirements to the conditions of the site. The bus canopies and passenger amenities create a consistent WMATA identity while giving Congress Heights a more welcoming and unified appearance.
Realistic renderings allowed the project team to evaluate the improvements from a passenger’s perspective, including how people would approach the station, move between transportation modes, and experience the new shelters and amenities. This helped WMATA make informed design decisions grounded in daily use while keeping the improvements within budget.
