The work included enlarging classroom window openings and replacing the existing windows with insulated double-pane casement, storefront, and curtain wall systems. Exterior storefront doors were also replaced.
The precast concrete walls were sealed and insulated, while the corroded structural steel was cleaned and recoated. A modern metal-panel rainscreen was installed across the façades to provide an additional layer of weather protection and transform the building’s appearance.
Leuterio Thomas provided full design services for Prince George’s County Public Schools, including cost estimating, permitting, bidding, and construction administration.
Rather than replace the existing precast walls, LT developed a rainscreen system that improved their performance while retaining the original building structure. Sealing and insulating the panels reduced water infiltration and heat transfer, while the new metal cladding protected the underlying construction from continued exposure.
The exposed steel was restored and recoated to slow further corrosion. Enlarged window openings introduced more daylight into the classrooms, and insulated double-pane systems improved thermal comfort and energy efficiency.
Together, the new windows, doors, insulation, waterproofing, steel restoration, and rainscreen created a more durable and efficient exterior envelope while giving the 1967 school a contemporary architectural identity.
